Al-Qarawiyyin: Who Founded One of the Oldest Universities?
The courtyard well of 859 at dawn, hero label "A MOSQUE FIRST".
Qaf long-form · YouTube film · for review
A 13-minute paper-collage documentary on the Qarawiyyin of Fez. It tells the founding story of Fatima al-Fihri as the chronicles tell it, shows how late those chronicles are and what the building itself kept (a dated wooden panel naming an Idrisid prince), follows the mosque as it grew into a place of learning, and asks what "oldest university" really means.
Upload pair A first: an inconclusive test keeps the first option.

Who founded Al-Qarawiyyin in Fez, one of the world's oldest universities? What the sources say about Fatima al-Fihri, and what she built. No music: only natural sound, paper and voice. Fez has remembered a woman from Kairouan, Fatima al-Fihri (also written al-Fihriya), known as Umm al-Banin, as the founder of its great mosque for at least 700 years. This film follows the evidence: the earliest surviving text historians have found that names her, a chronicle of 1326, about 470 years after the date it gives; the wooden panel of 877 that names not her but an Idrisid prince; and how a small mosque on the Kairouan bank of Fez grew into a centre of learning and, in 1963, the University of al-Qarawiyyin (also spelled Al Quaraouiyine or Karaouine). Is it the oldest university in the world? It depends on what you mean by "university", and we show both answers.
